As you have probably realized by now, it is always a pleasure for us to hang out with the animated and fun loving kids (big and small) from Ronald McDonald House® Northern Alberta! Last week we met up with our pals at Fire Hall 2. Are you jealous? Who doesn’t want to explore a Fire Hall and Fire Trucks? The crew there were more than happy to oblige. We learned the differences between a Pump and a Ladder and a few of the tools used at the fire scene. For example, did you know that a Thermal Imaging Camera, or TIC, is often used during a fire to detect even the faintest heat sources. Our kids do; they got to see how the TIC worked in action by playing hide and seek in the dark. The TIC worked so well that it turned into a really short game.

It was fairly obvious that the highlight of the day was trying out a charged hose line. One would think that the kids would of been out of control excited which they were; however, it was the ‘manchildren’ Dads that were even more enthusiastic. This task was definitely an exercise in restraint for the grown ups who thankfully shot only the target and not the entire group regardless of how tempted they may have been.

Not to be left out, our 1 platoon Dispatchers joined in the fun chatting on the radios with the kids. They also sent a test event to the hall which allowed everyone to see and hear how the Firecrews are notified of emergency calls. This should have been the highlight ‘cause boy those Dispatchers sure are fun!

Did we mention that the Easter Bunny even showed up for an Easter egg hunt? He discovered a lot of good hiding spots on the Pump! A great experience and another fantastic opportunity to connect the House with the community and the community with the House. All in all, it was an amazing day! In fact, it was so much fun that we’re already planning the next one!
