Sharing a meal is one of the most normal family experiences you can have. As we grow up, some of our greatest memories are shared around the family dinner table as we laugh, share stories from our day and support each other. At Ronald McDonald House Charities® Northern Alberta, we strive to create and provide a culture of normal family moments. These moments are what shape our lives and contribute to happiness and positivity. It was from this that Meals that Mend: Frozen Edition was born.
At RMHCNA, life is never black and white. Each and every day can bring a new experience and present a new schedule which differs from the previous day. This is the reality for each and every House family as they support their children on their medical journey. With varying schedules, many are destined to eat on the go when the moment presents itself, for some, this moment never comes. It’s up to us to provide every access point possible for families to gain strength through wholesome healthy meals. Meals that Mend: Frozen Edition provides this support with 24-hour access to fresh prepared, individually packaged meals made possible by the Edmonton Firefighters Union Local 209.
As Chef and Meals Coordinator at RMHCNA, I have the pleasure of experiencing first hand the impact of this program. Families who find themselves away from the House for extended periods need no longer worry about returning in time for dinner or in time to enjoy a leftover plate. They now have the opportunity to pack a microwaveable, ready to eat meal at a time that best suits them. This has proven to lessen the stress levels experienced daily by families with extended hospital stays, surgeries and those utilizing the Day Pass Program. Sometimes in life the dinner table or venue changes for a family, but what never changes is the importance of just being a family. Share a meal, enjoy your family and create your own normal. It’s who you share it with that counts.
